Long fish stock accounts for 35% of total increase in UK quota after Brexit

Just one fish stock off the west coast of Scotland accounts for a third of the total increase in quota by volume across the whole of the UK after Brexit, based on an analysis by a fisheries expert.

Griffin Carpenter, a fisheries consultant and former senior researcher at the New Economics Foundation, calculates that the UK's quota of Western mackerel will increase by 40,000 metric tons, after the UK's share of the stock increased by 11 percentage points to 69.2% under the Brexit deal.

Based on the UK's total allowable catch for all fish stocks after Brexit, the increase amounts to 35% of the total increase, based on the analysis.
